Alveda King: An Open Letter to Spiritual Leaders Regarding Upcoming Elections

The following letter regarding upcoming elections is to America’s spiritual leaders and all people of goodwill.

“Live creatively, friends. If someone falls into [error] sin, forgivingly restore him, saving your critical comments for yourself. You might be needing forgiveness before the day’s out. Stoop down and reach out to those who are oppressed. Share their burdens, and so complete Christ’s law. If you think you are too good for that, you are badly deceived.” – Galatians 6:1-3 MSG

A while back, I attended a meeting hosted by The Family Leadership Summit. There I was especially inspired by the IF 7:14 theme.

In view of the upcoming early primaries in Iowa and South Carolina, I am stirred in my heart to encourage all spiritual leaders, and indeed all people of goodwill to be civil in our dealings towards one another, in political dealings and indeed all of our activities. Below are excerpts from a letter I sent to Iowa:

Hello. We haven’t spoken since my last eventful visit to Iowa. Thanks again for including me.

Much has transpired since the release of IF 7:14.

I’m writing with a concern. With the momentous IOWA primary fast approaching, several campaigns are departing from the IF 7:14 formula, and reverting to dirty politics.

I was disturbed when several of the leading republican candidates had staffers and fans – with or without their knowledge – team up on one member of the front running team. Let me be clear: There was a very dishonest smear campaign to discredit Dr. Ben Carson’s long term Prolife contributions as well as his transformational from rags to riches testimony; and the Trump, Rubio and Cruz campaigns jumped on the hatchet wagon joining in the attempt to destroy a noble warrior.

One should wonder why there is such an effort from the media to discredit Dr. Carson in particular. He is either waved off, misquoted or ignored more than the others. And his contenders are involved in the ploy.

Before anyone says “that’s just politics. They’re just going after the weakest link,” I’d like to remind us that it isn’t Jesus. It will be very dangerous for candidates to try to represent themselves as Christians while allowing politics as usual behind the scenes.

God is watching us, and [as leaders,] you perhaps know this better than anyone.

[Leaders] have been “leading the charge for truth and integrity in the upcoming elections.” I am writing to encourage you to lead others to understanding that a team of winners is running for President. In some cases this is reflected in the polls. What the polls also reflect sadly, is dirty dealings behind the scenes.

[The slate] is a “Most Valuable Team” with several winning players. While there can be only one MVP – that winner will only stand the test of time if the victory is won without worldly political tactics.

I will not be endorsing any candidates. I am a friend of the Carson campaign. However, as an Evangelist, I am standing in a prayerful position. I remember the advice of my uncle, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who was an Independent:

“I feel someone must remain in the position of non-alignment, so that he can look objectively at both parties and be the conscience of both—not the servant or master of either.”[33] In a 1958 interview, he expressed his view that neither party was perfect, saying, “I don’t think the Republican party is a party full of the almighty God nor is the Democratic party. They both have weaknesses … And I’m not inextricably bound to either party.”[34]

Again, I am not writing to tell anyone who to endorse or who to vote for. Rather I’m asking that [all leaders] investigate motives and encourage people to pray and be honest and Christ-like – very difficult to do in the political arena – but not impossible.

A Carson fan sent me this link. I’m only including it to remind all godly candidates that we are not contending with flesh and blood, and to call us to prayer.

Ulysses Dale and Jeff Sailor give a Tribute to Dr. Ben and Candy Carson for all he has done to support education and not giving up on the families and communities he has served.

God bless America.

    Please endorse Dr Carson.

  2. Jim Lockwood says:

Thank you Aveda for speaking up on behalf of Dr. and Mrs. Carson! There a great couple who would represent the United States of America extremely well and perhaps lead us back to being a Godly nation once again!! I know in my heart that he’s the right person for such a time as this!!!

  3. Mark says:

I expect this from Trump. He’s for PP. I do not expect less from Rubio who has not been truthful with Floridians as a Floridian. He’s proven himself not trustworthy, not Christianly. I did not expect the things I heard from the fans or supporters of Cruz and do not know if it is top down or not. I sure hope not. Things I’ve heard are comparisons of his denomination versus Dr. Carson’s and thus saying Dr. Carson is unqualified to serve (though such doctrines do not effect the job in the lest). Playing on religious ignorance or jealousy?

My bottom line, you may wish to consider it, too, I think it’s worthy is Jethro’s directive to Moses on choosing any leader: God fearing, successful, honest and not greedy ((power or $?)

seemed to me Cruz and Carson have those 4 qualities unless Senator Cruz knows these things are going on in his camp and he’s staying silent

  4. I always like and admire your comments. You make so much sense. If only others would follow your lead. Thanks and Merry Christmas

  5. Lina S. Curry-Owens says:

Absolute beautiful. We lift this election and surrender it to God, our Father. Prayer is never ceasing for Ben Carson and his family, all candidates, America and Israel. Thank you for sharing this letter and it will be shared forward for as far as God will make a way.

  6. Nathan Bannister says:

The points in this letter reflect my thoughts as well. Thank you for making these observations publicly. I fear that this country is divided so strongly between extreme left or extreme right and that could ultimately be the thing that destroys this country. Regardless of politics, I see Ben Carson as the candidate who is reasonable and thoughtful in considering the issues of today. The loss of this opportunity to elect a man who in this time is uniquely positioned to help all people, is something I know you have a greater understanding of than perhaps anyone. Thank you again for your thoughts. God bless you and your family this Christmas.

  7. Gaylie Blake says:

Thank you for writing your thoughts about the politics that are happening now during this presidential campaign. I have been dismayed at the tactics used against Dr. Carson. Our Lord was no stranger to criticism and it led him to the cross. It seems that Dr. Carson’s opponents would like to crucify him. I pray that he can withstand these attacks and continue to be the strong, thoughtful, prayerful, leader that we know he is. God and history will judge what people do and say in these times. I pray for God to guide this nation to a better day.
    Sincerely, Gaylie Blake

  8. Robert Blaski says:

    “Ben vs. Goliath”
Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. – 1 Samuel 17:45
Israel’s army was being taunted by the Philistine giant Goliath, and things looked hopeless to the soldiers of Israel. Then steps forward David, the shepherd boy. God slew the giant that day through the available hand of David.
Pediatric neurosurgeon Doctor Ben Carson (and his talented medical team) faced his Goliath, performing surgery on conjoined twins in South Africa many years ago. Away from his familiar surroundings at Johns Hopkins, and equipped only with the bare necessities, Dr. Carson knew in his mind that this procedure was humanly impossible. At this point, he asked God to take over and work through his available hands.
At the critical moment, Dr. Carson “zoned out” and really can’t remember what he was doing. The medical team afterwards commented as to how they couldn’t believe what he was doing.
As he made the final cut separating the twins, the Alleluia Chorus began playing on the sound system. Everybody had goosebumps!
Dr. Carson admits that it wasn’t him doing the work, but God through him.
The thrilling testimony of this ordeal can be heard on YouTube video: Dr. Ben Carson Creation Vs Evolution[] cue video to the 11:30 minute mark. America and the world are facing unprecedented Goliath challenges heading into the future and I believe Dr. Ben is the “David” for such a time as this!

  9. Renee says:

I agree that they have treated Dr. Carson as he is insignificant and then when he was rising in the poles made his religion into an issue twisting it into something that made it look like he was a nut. I am A new SDA and trust me they have not told the truth on that issue. Everything he said was taken out of context. He has never lied yet you here people claiming he did because of the media saying he did when in fact he did not lie about anything! I am white so no it isn’t about race !

  10. I met Ms. King in DC back in fall of 2004 at pro-life convention. I appreciate her couarge and commitment to being faithful to the teachings of Jesus Christ. I have seen how Americans salivate and foam at the mouth in expressing their divided state in this ongoing power struggle. I love Carson’s sincerity and have faith in a man’s ability to transform a nation that has totally lost its way. Without a return to trusting God, America is doomed. This smear campaign was something I warned people about months ago. America will choose chartisma over character every time. Reminds me of how Israel asked God for a king and chose the man who looked the part, Saul.

  11. Alveda King says:

While I have held public office and have been a political appointee, my last political endorsement was in 2007. Since that time I have been praying for those in authority that God will send us great leaders in order that we may live peaceful lives. My political activities are very limited these days, most often involving more prayer than anything. Having said all of this, I pray that God will guide you and bless you on your journey in the days ahead.

“Before I was a civil rights leader, I was a preacher of the Gospel. This was my first calling and it still remains my greatest commitment. You know, actually all that I do in civil rights I do because I consider it a part of my ministry. I never came out with an [political] endorsement. My father did, but I never made one. I don’t think the Republican party is a party full of the almighty God nor is the Democratic party. They both have weaknesses … And I’m not inextricably bound to either party.” Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

  12. Paul Farrell says:

Thank you Dr. King for reminding me of the important things. I always need reminders, sometimes even from one room to the next.:)

  13. John L. Battey says:

Ted Cruz is my Senator. I helped in putting him where he is, though saying so now gives me nothing but shame. Since his entry into the Presidential race, the ongoing an regular conversations I had with hhis office on important issues has stopped, and he has betrayed promises he made to me by attending fundraisers rather than being in the Senate to vote.
Now we come to the matter of his campaign advisors Austine Ruse & Steve Deace telling lies to smear Dr. Ben Carson on the prolife issue, when Dr. Carson’s position has not changed since before he was in college. The smears were published in the week following Thanksgiving Day, and Ted has had a month to correct the matter, but instead has been a guest on Steve Deace’s radio talk show and accepted his endorsement and in doing so, sanctioned those vile attacks.
Dr. Ben Carson has my full and unrelenting support as a Presidential candidate. Ted Cruz is a name I no longer dare speak in good company for fear of loosing my civility.

  14. James Potkoski says:

Please note: Dr. Carson is, NOT 100% PRO-LIFE! Abortion up to 5 months is OK? He also was NEVER 100% Second Amendment! We The People Need, Mike Huckabee!

  15. Renee Werth says:

I need specifics on how Ted Cruz has attempted to smear Dr. Carson’s name. I know about what happened at the Iowa caucus but need to know more about his attempt to berated Dr. Carson.

  16. Alveda King says:

What I’m saying is that politicians need to take the high road and not attack each other. Like Carson said in the Presidential debate this past Saturday, “This is the 105th birthday of Reagan. His 11th commandment was to not speak ill of another Republican. So, I’m not going to use this opportunity to savage the reputation of Senator Cruz.” Instead of pointing out specific remarks. let’s just pray for unity among the party so we can elect a pro-life president.
