NEW YORK — Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, welcomed the news announced by Pope Francis at the Synod of Bishops today that there would be a new dicastery formed at the Vatican to cover the themes of Laity, Family, and Life. This new dicastery will replace the Pontifical Council for the Family and the Pontifical Council for the Laity, and joined to it will be the Pontifical Academy for Life.

“This is an announcement we expected,” said Fr. Frank, “and it is of particular interest to me because I was appointed both to the Pontifical Council for the Family and to the Pontifical Academy for Life. These agencies have fostered the pro-life and pro-life ministries of the Church, including Priests for Life, and provide valuable resources and documents to help the faithful articulate the message of life and family.

“Now, with the creation of a new dicastery covering these themes, along with that of the laity, lends even greater weight to these priorities of the Church. We will see in the months to come the additional details of how this new dicastery will be structured and how it will function. We will work closely with the new dicastery, particularly in view of helping bishops and priests be courageous, vocal defenders of life and family, the teachings about which are unchanged and unchangeable, and compassionate pastoral ministers of those facing difficulties in these arenas.”
