Pro-Life College Student Quits Job With Girl Scouts Over A T-shirt

An Arizona college student who stopped in at her workplace wearing a pro-life t-shirt quit her job rather than obey a supervisor who ordered her to turn the “Pray to End Abortion” shirt inside out.

Renise Rodriguez, 21-year-old religious studies major at the University of Arizona, worked as a Girl Experience Associate for the Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona in Tucson. When she went to her office on Jan. 3 during her off-duty hours to prepare materials for a meeting, she was told twice by a supervisor that if she planned to stay in the office, or attend a troop meeting, she would have to turn her shirt inside out.

“I started to get emotional because of the way I was treated so I left without preparing for the meeting and told my co-worker that she would have to get the stuff together,” Miss Rodriguez said. “As I was driving out, I called a friend crying and told her the story. I was so shocked at the way I was treated. After contemplating it for the rest of that day, I decided to write my letter of resignation.”

Her letter did not specify her reason for resigning, but she plans to discuss it with another supervisor when she does her formal exit interview.

“It is the courage and conviction of young people like Renise that gives us hope that we are closer than ever to winning this battle and bringing an end to child killing in America,” said Bryan Kemper, Director of Youth Outreach for Priests for Life. “Priests for Life is committed to educating, activating and equipping young people to be a voice for life and young heroes like Renise prove this generation is a pro-life generation.”

Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, applauded the young woman.

“What does the pro-life movement need the most right now? It is not large numbers of people who believe abortion is wrong; it is a small, courageous band of people who are willing to risk and sacrifice everything to end abortion,” he said. “Renise is exactly that kind of person, who has not only the right attitude about abortion, but the passion it takes to make the protection of the unborn our number one priority! Our Youth Outreach, and all the branches of our Priests for Life/Gospel of Life Ministry, will continue to instill this spirit in those we serve.”

Noting the shirt Renise was wearing was designed by Stand True Ministry, a pro-life youth organization he founded, Kemper said, “We will be sending her several more of our pro-life shirts to help her stand up and be a voice wherever she is.”

Priests for Life is the nation’s largest Catholic pro-life organization dedicated to ending abortion and euthanasia. For more information, visit Priests for Life.

    Dear Fr. Pavone:

Thanks for this!! Please help me with my campaign to get the word out about Susan G Komen Race for the Cure and Planned Parenthood. I am in the process of trying to contact every diocese in the USA, and asking the bishops to have all pastors direct their congregations to avoid all participation in Komen events, and to have their parishoners acquaint themselves with the almost 200 corporate partners of Komen, and avoid doing business with any of them.

My efforst so far are frustrating. I cannot understand the reluctance on the part of any true pro-lifer to this request, but my own archbishop in New Orleans, Gregory Aymond has replied that he will not do this! He has offered to discuss it further, and I am contemplating exactly how to approach him again.

    Any suggestions?

On behalf of Fr Frank Pavone, thank you very much for writing with your concern.

First of all, please review the “Guidelines on Giving to Charitable Organizations” from the National Catholic Bioethics Center, which consults with the Vatican, at:

The Respect Life Apostolate of the Archdiocese of St. Louis issued a statement which “acknowledges the beneficial work of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, formerly known as the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, in the area of breast cancer detection, prevention, research and treatment. Due to its policy allowing affiliates to offer financial support to abortion providing facilities, its denial of studies showing abortion as a cause of breast cancer, and its endorsement of embryonic stem cell research, the Respect Life Apostolate neither supports nor encourages participation in activities that benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure.”

    Please visit:

The Catholic bishops in Ohio have asked all parishes and schools to cease support of the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Please visit:

The Michigan Knights of Columbus won’t back Komen over Planned Parenthood. Please visit:

The Life Issues Institute has additional information on Komen that you can use here:

I hope this is helpful. Be assured of our prayers.
