Billboard Controversies

Billboard Controversies

Over the past year or so there have been many controversies over billboards trying to get the message out that the African American Community is the target of a concerted effort by the abortion industry in general, and Planned Parenthood specifically, to exterminate the Black people.

Some of the cities where these billboards have been placed include Atlanta, GA, Oakland, CA, Los Angeles, CA, Jacksonville, FL, Austin, TX, and Manhattan, NY.

The billboards are an attempt to bring up the subject of genocide in the black communities to the forefront and to open the public’s eyes to the truth about abortion. I don’t understand the controversy over the billboards. All they do is state the facts and the facts don’t lie.

Fact: 35,088 abortions were performed in 2008

Fact: 20,909 were performed on black women

Fact: 9,954 were performed on white women

Fact: Blacks make up 12% of the population but account for 36% of the abortions.

Fact: Black women are 1.5 times more likely to get pregnant but are 3 times more likely to get an abortion.

Many in the community seem to get upset about these billboards. The news reports always deal with the controversy but they don’t address the fact that the billboards are accurate in what they are saying.

Many in the Black community get upset and feel that these billboards are racial and making Black women look bad or portraying them in a bad light. As a Black woman myself, I think that they are missing the point.

One billboard in New York City stated, “The most dangerous place for an African American is in the womb.” It pictured a young beautiful little girl in a summer dress under the caption and below the picture was a website, This message is true because the leading cause of death for African Americana is abortion. In 2005, according to CDC date, abortion killed more Blacks than the next seven leading causes of death (heart disease, cancer, strokes, accidents, diabetes, homicide, and chronic lower respiratory disease) combined. This is what Blacks should be outraged about.

Nobody is saying the Black women are bad and they kill their babies. What is being said is that those babies in their wombs are being targeted by the abortion industry.

The abortion industry wants to make this about healthcare access and a woman’s reproductive rights. Nobody wants to deny healthcare to anyone, but abortion is not healthcare.

As for a woman’s reproductive rights, nobody wants to control their rights either. When women choose to have sex, they should understand that sex can lead to pregnancy whether they are using birth control or not. With that in mind, they can proceed or not. If they proceed, then they should accept the responsibilities that go with the sexual act. If they should become pregnant, then they are already a mother of a new baby, a separate person and not a part of their body. The baby has different genetic makeup and is totally different from his/her mother. How is telling a woman that they should not kill their baby in any way trying to control their reproductive right? It’s not!

What it all boils down to is that the Black community is being targeted and the community should be outraged, especially Black leaders.

The next time you see one of these billboards or are discussing them with your friends, tell them that the billboards are not about black women but rather about an epidemic that’s sweeping our country and we need to stop it before we become extinct or an endangered species, as another billboard says.
