Priests for Life will announce some of its plans and strategies for the 2016 election during a press conference at 10 a.m. Jan. 6 in the Bloomberg Room at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.
“The people of God need to elect public servants who know the difference between serving the public and killing the public,” said Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, who will be the main presenter at the press conference, which, he said, “will challenge both Church and state to fulfill their duties to protect children in the womb. Ending the holocaust of abortion has for some time — and remains now — the most urgent moral priority for both Church and state.”
Fr. Pavone will be joined by Janet Morana, Executive Director of Priests for Life and a key participant in Catholic outreach efforts in past presidential election cycles.
The press conference will, in particular, call upon churches to stop censoring themselves when it comes to speaking about politics and elections.
“We’re not asking anyone to break the law,” said Fr. Pavone. “We’re asking them to understand the law and stop being afraid to live it out. The law allows us to do far more than we realize.”
To address that point, also joining Father Frank Pavone at the press conference will be James Bopp Jr., an attorney and a top expert on what the law permits churches to do regarding elections. He has provided legal guidance to Priests for Life in election-related activity through the years.
Mr. Bopp, who founded the Bopp Law Firm in 1992, was identified in a Reuters report as one of 66 attorneys – among 17,000 — whose clients have had remarkable success in having their petitions heard by the Supreme Court.
Also participating will be Christiana Holcomb, an attorney with the Alliance Defending Freedom, which has likewise provided tremendous help to Priests for Life and to churches and other organizations nationwide.
Since joining Alliance Defending Freedom in 2012, Ms. Holcomb has worked to protect the freedom of churches, Christian schools, and Christian ministries to freely exercise their faith without government interference. She also advocates for these issues as an Alliance Defending Freedom Regional Legal Academy faculty member and as a conference speaker throughout the country.
“Much or our message has been outlined in my recently published book Abolishing Abortion (Thomas Nelson, August 2015),” Father Pavone said. “As I document extensively in the book, churches often hide behind the excuse that they will lose their tax-exempt status if they become too vocal about voting pro-life,” Father Pavone said. “It is ironic that as churches oppose the Obama administration’s mandates limiting religious freedom, those same churches impose their own mandates limiting that same freedom. It’s time to stop censoring ourselves and to stop hiding behind the tax man while doing so.”
The National Press Club is at 529 14th St NW in D.C. For information about the press conference or to speak to Father Pavone, call Leslie Palma, Communications Director for Priests for Life, at 347-286-7277 or email her at email@example.com
