TITUSVILLE, FL -- Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, issued the following statement today regarding the anticipated “cloture” votes tomorrow in the U.S. Senate on S. 3275, the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, and S. 311, the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.

“Both of these bills underscore the humanity of the unborn and our need to understand that the child is a separate and unique individual,” Father Pavone said. “Doctors who treat pregnant women are actually treating two patients.”

“Scientific studies continue to reveal that babies in the womb can feel pain much earlier than we thought they could. And lawmakers can legitimately act on such evidence, to protect children from the agony of an abortion that tears them limb from limb while still alive. The Pain-Capable bill would provide this protection,” he said. “This is the very least that we can do to protect these babies.”

The Born-Alive bill is also about compassion, he said.

“This bill does not prohibit any abortions, but instead seeks humane treatment for those children who survive abortion. You would think there would be no debate about this, but in fact the Democrats oppose this bill as well. They claim children never survive abortion, but it is public knowledge that they do. Democrats also claim these newborn survivors are protected by existing laws; but they fail to point out that those laws are an incomplete, insufficient patchwork that is far from adequate to protect all such children.”

Before the bills can be voted on, there has to be a preliminary vote to end debate. These “cloture” votes require more than a majority; they require 60 votes.

Neither bill is likely to garner the 60 votes necessary in order to proceed.

“This is entirely due to the stubborn, irrational and immoral opposition of the Senate Democrats, who – like their counterparts in the House of Representatives -- are abortion extremists,” said Father Pavone.

“But Tuesday’s cloture votes will put the senators on record as to where they stand on protecting the unborn from pain and providing life-saving care for newborns who survive an abortion. Citizens have a right to know where their senators stand on this. Thirty-five Senate seats will be on the ballot in November, and we want to ensure we fill those seats with reliable pro-life lawmakers.”

Priests for Life today will email an action alert to its supporters, asking them to contact both of their U.S. senators to urge “ay” votes on both bills.

“Democrats are outside the mainstream on both of these bills, and we want them to know their constituents will be watching how they vote tomorrow,” Father Pavone said.

Priests for Life (www.EndAbortion.US)  is the world’s largest Catholic pro-life organization dedicated exclusively to ending abortion. Pro-life efforts are working. The abortion rate in America is the lowest it has been since Roe v. Wade and in recent years states have passed more than 400 laws to protect the unborn. The number of freestanding abortion clinics in the U.S. has dropped from 2179 in 1991 down to 710 today, and President Trump has placed 187 (and counting) pro-life judges on the federal bench.
