TITUSVILLE, FL -- “It’s impossible to know how often the conscience rights of healthcare workers are violated, but under the Trump administration, something is finally being done about it,” Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, said today after learning that a Vermont hospital was issued a notice of violation for forcing a nurse to take part in an abortion.
The operating nurse at the University of Vermont Medical Center had been included on a list of workers who objected to taking part in abortions but was forced to do so on May 9, 2018, even though there were other medical personnel in the operating room who could have assisted.
An investigation by the Office of Civil Rights within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) found that the nurse was not the only hospital employee whose conscience rights had been violated. The notice of violation gives the hospital 30 days to notify the Office of Civil Rights that it is changing its policies to conform with federal law, or risk losing its HHS funding.
“The Trump administration and the HHS Office of Civil Rights are ensuring that those who do not want to take part in killing a child will no longer have to do so,” Father Pavone said. “This is vital and important advocacy, and another reminder about the importance of elections. A pro-abortion president will not care about an individual’s conscience rights. You can be sure of that.”
Father Pavone said he is praying for the nurse and all those forced to violate their consciences.
“As we have pointed out since launching the Healing the Shockwaves of Abortion initiative in 2015, abortion does not only impact the baby who is killed and his parents,” he said. “Healthcare workers also suffer terribly from their involvement in abortion. I pray for all of those who are wounded by abortion.”
