On February 15, Black Americans for Life celebrated Black History month at their first Awards Banquet held at the Figlio's Tower Restaurant on the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, Missouri. Dr. Alveda King was the guest speaker for the event.
Dr. King stated that she was very impressed with the cultural mix of the Kansas City Black Americans for Life group. It was a fulfillment of the prophecy that her Uncle Dr. Martin Luther King said in his "I have a dream speech, "black men and white men, Catholics and Protestants, Jews and Gentiles working together in unity for civil rights".
The following Kansas City leaders were honored as being outstanding in the pro-life African American Community; Dr. Charles Briscoe (Beacon of Light), Dr. Brenda Jenkins (Virtue of Life), Pastor Gus Franklin (Protector of Life), Mrs. Mae Jackson (Faithful Witness), and Pastor Aaron Lavender (Defender of Life).
